Where is yoho lake




















Much of the water comes from the Yoho River, ice cold and milky with rock flour from its source at the Wapta Icefield. Many other glaciers feed the Yoho and the Kicking Horse, which thunders over Wapta Falls before rushing through a steep-walled canyon to the Columbia River.

Precipitous peaks sporting epaulettes of glacial ice rise more than a mile above the transportation corridor. The highest point in the park is South Goodsir Tower, with a summit elevation of 11, feet. A side road leads to world-class Takakkaw Falls.

Swollen with glacial meltwater on summer afternoons, the falls plunges 1, feet to the floor of the Yoho Valley. Other roads lead to appropriately named Emerald Lake. Specimens are on display at the park information center. From Calgary the closest airport , follow Trans-Canada 1 west for miles to the small community of Field, near the center of the park.

From the south, take Hwy. Yoho is accessible and enjoyable year-round. The western valley floors green up in May, and by mid-June the side roads are open. By mid-July the higher trail passes are snow free, and later in the month the alpine wildflowers reach their peak. The trail features an ascent of 1, feet An invigorating hike with a taste of just about everything. This is a difficult rated trail that features an ascent of 2, feet There are chances to see wildlife and wildflowers while taking in the remarkable wilderness.

The panoramic views experienced from the top of the ascent are mind-boggling. Much of the journey is up through the forest and across the rugged terrain. This is a 6. This is a moderate rated trail with views of a lake, a river, a waterfall, and panoramic views of the mountains. This is another way to see Takakkaw Falls from a different perspective and some say more impressive. There are chances to see wildlife as well as wildflowers during the late spring and early summer.

Quick Navigation Toggle navigation. It's a series of forested switchbacks before it levels out for the rest of the trail. Apart from the distant mountain views, in summer there are some close-up distractions to any complaining leg muscles. Wildflowers such as globe flowers, yellow glacier lilies and pink mountain heather line the trail with splashes of color.

The glacial lake, at the foot of Wapta Mountain, makes a good spot for a break or lunch. There is also a backcountry campground on the west side. You need a pass for entry to any Canadian national park and these can be purchased from the visitor information centre at Field on the Trans-Canada Highway about 3km west of the Yoho Valley Road turnoff.

It may work out cheaper to buy an annual pass if you are staying for a week or more or are planning other park visits. There is the possibility of encountering bears on this trail, particularly on the forested path to Yoho Lake, so take the usual precautions. It always feels so satisfying to see stunning views that you know you could never see without walking yourself there to see them. The trail continues to several other lakes and falls, but we headed back down to Takakkaw where we started to continue our adventure back in Banff the next day. Yoho Lake is a perfect destination for balancing easy access with getting a little off the beaten path.
